On a remote island where every favor is a debt, and every debt is eventually collected.
Henrik Aalto has run the butcher shop his father left him for twelve years, in the same unhurried, unremarkable way his father ran it before him. He asks no questions about what happens in the delivery room. He never has. On Sillgrund — population three hundred and forty, one ferry a day, no anonymity to speak of — that kind of discretion has always passed for good character.
Then he finds a human finger among his morning pork delivery, professionally severed, and discretion stops being enough.
Within days, anonymous packages begin arriving across the island — a photograph, a necklace, a button pressed into an old man's shaking hand — each one addressed to someone with a small, old reason to be afraid. The name that surfaces, again and again, is Elin Kask: a ferry-ticket clerk who vanished twenty-five years ago, and whom the island has spent a quarter century agreeing to remember as a girl who simply left.
To find out what actually happened to her, Henrik has no choice but to open his dead father's ledger — a private record of debts and deliveries never meant to be read by anyone who didn't already know its shorthand. What he uncovers reaches further than one missing woman. It implicates the island's most respected man, the quiet arithmetic of favors that has run Sillgrund for generations, and, eventually, his own family's place inside a system he always believed he stood outside of.
What Henrik finds will not bring the kind of justice the island has spent twenty-five years avoiding. There will only be the truth — and the question of what it costs one man to be the only person left carrying it.
The Ledger is a slow, clear-eyed Nordic Noir for readers of Henning Mankell, Karin Fossum, and Jussi Adler-Olsen, and for anyone who finished The Killing wanting one more long winter on one more island where nothing is truly hidden — only never said aloud.
