When Fliss, Maggie and Dan’s teenage daughter is late from school, they are annoyed, until a knock on the front door reveals the police come to give them bad news. Fliss has been killed in road accident. Their lives are shattered, and identifying the body makes their predicament worse.
They struggle to get over their loss. A few months later, while out shopping Maggie sees a young girl Kate, Fliss’s age, sitting with a guitar, busking. Her voice is amazing, and she wonders why Kate she does this. Maggie gives her money because she is brilliant.
Every day, Maggie sees her there, and soon befriends her, asking why Kate is homeless. She ran away because her father forced her to be a prostitute, and her mother is a drunk.
Maggie helps her find a halfway house. Unable to settle she asks if she can stay with Maggie and Dan for now. They agree but are wary of her. A friend gets Kate a job in a cake shop, but she wants to be a singer in a band.
Maggie and Dan realize her talent and try to help her. However, Kate’s father is hellbent on finding her and making money out of her. When Kate disappears after a concert, Maggie and Dan are heartbroken. But Dan is determined to bring her back. But in doing so, he must face his own demons, which he thought he’d conquered long ago.
